It is quite common that couples in love confess that the first look was enough to know their partner that is "The One". But scientists here do differ and say that the first look is not so much for romance but more about ego and sex.
A study was carried out at Aberdeen University that involved volunteers looking at four different sets of images- Women looking happy, Women looking disgusted, Men looking happy and Men looking disgusted.
The volunteers were then asked to rate the relative attarctiveness of the images in each pair. The researchers found that the attraction being most profound when someone is directly looking at you. They aslo found one common thing that the attraction was based on social cues that say, "I'm interested in you".
Based on the volunteers' report, the researchers found that if someone gives a direct stare, that gives a much attractive impression and also only if the looks they give say they like you.The preference shooted up if the face in the picture was of opposite sex.
One of the doctors involved in the research was quoted saying "It does seem to be a sort of narcissistic thing. People are attracted to people who are attracted to them."
Social signals like how attracted someone is to you is very important. You get attracted to people who are attracted to you and that shows attractiveness is not just about physical beauty.
The research also showed that people like faces with direct gaze more than the same faces with averted gaze. In simple words people find more impressive and attractive when they are being looked at.
The results were published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society.
